There seems to be a ransomware pandemic at this time of the year as Sony yet again joins the list of multinational companies to have been hacked in 2023. The Japanese tech giant has launched a full investigation into the attack which has been owned up to by a previously unknown hacker crew known as Ransomed.vc.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE ATTACK SO FAR

The group is known to operate primarily on the dark web as a cybercrime unit as well as ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) provider, the group reportedly operates physically out of Ukraine and Russia, it is alleged that the group’s strategy is to predominantly find loopholes in company systems and highlight violations in data protection regulations under the European Union to coax companies into paying them as this would be a much lesser financial cost to these companies compared to the fines which the EU’s data protection unit would slam on them for regulatory violations.

The group publicized evidence of the attack on the dark web by posting the company’s internal documents such as power point presentations and java files, about 6000 Sony files have been compromised so far, a relatively small data compromise but enough to cause some panic as to the company’s security.

The group shows no interest in requesting a ransom, instead they are threatening to sell the company’s data on the dark web, with the proposed sale date slated for 28th September 2023.

Apparently, this is not a first-time experience for Sony as the company suffered a similar attack in 2011, where date of over 77milllion of its PlayStation users accounts and data were compromised, also a 2014 data breach to Sony Pictures by a North Korean hacker group and in 2015 where it paid $8million for staff data breach. Sony is yet to put out a public statement concerning the attack.
